Established in Chartres since 1863, Ateliers Lorin required major renovation work. Their selection by the Heritage Mission will give the municipality a financial boost.

When they went out of business in 2017, the city of Chartres took over their workshops and archives to ensure their sustainability. Initial emergency maintenance work has already been carried out, in particular to protect the site from water. “This year we are investing 200,000 euros to restore one of the gates and the perimeter wall,” adds Isabelle Vincent, deputy in charge of culture and heritage.

“The complete renovation of the site is estimated at 5 million euros. So this announcement is very good news!,” the elected official welcomes. In addition, Dassault Histoire & Patrimoine, sponsor of the Heritage Foundation, has announced its support for the project in the amount of 180,000 euros. Elodie Vally specifies that certain parts of the place are not inhabited because they threaten to collapse: “This workshop is one of the last in France, it must be perfectly preserved! It has more than 6,000 reference sites, a great heritage and is the guarantor of the preservation of unique knowledge!”

Les Ateliers Lorin has 6 employees, including 5 master glassmakers. “It’s good to see that things are finally moving. It’s a recognition of our work and the value of the place.” 18 iconic sites are selected according to four criteria: heritage and cultural interest, danger status, project maturity, and impact on the area and development project.

The Heritage Mission, led by Stéphane Bern since 2018, offers millions of players the opportunity every year to participate in La Française des jeux scratch and draw games. The endowment amount for each site will be announced during the upcoming European Heritage Days in the fall.
