British Formula 1 Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton announced his 7-time world champion amicable separation from his 7-year-old coach, Angela Colin, 48, before the Formula 1 Jeddah Grand Prix in Saudi Arabia on Sunday.
Both Hamilton and the New Zealand coach issued a statement on their accounts on social media, and the driver said: “For the last seven years, Angela has been by my side, supporting me to be a better person. I am stronger athletically and better in person thanks to her. I wish her success as she pursues her dreams. Thank you, Ang.”
For her part, the coach said: “Exactly 7 years ago, I stood on the podium of the Australian championship, and now I am happy for my next adventure. Thank you, the Mercedes team, for this experience in Formula 1. I know that my story will continue, and you are the best Hamilton in history. your dream”.
However, the pursuit of the eighth title is not a bed of flowers for the British driver due to stiff competition from champion Verstappen, the Red Bull driver, and Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said that he would not blame Hamilton if he decided to search for another team.
Hamilton has a contract worth 40 million pounds annually with Mercedes, and the contract expires at the end of the season, and there are doubts surrounding the extension after a modest start this season, as he finished fifth in Bahrain and 11th in the Saudi race trials.
After Hamilton complained about his car, Wolff said: “If Lewis wants to win an eighth title, he has to get the car he wants, and if we can’t offer him this car in the next two years, he will need to look for it elsewhere and I will not blame him for that.”
